New Residence Hall 1
This microsite offers a central hub for project updates, behind-the-scenes insights, and a look at how this new facility will support the University's long-term vision. As Carolina grows, this residence hall will help meet rising demand for student housing, enhance the campus living experience, and create a welcoming environment for the next generation of Tar Heels.
Project Scope
As the nation’s first public university, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continues to shape what’s next—preparing a growing and diverse student body for leadership across the state and beyond. In response to a proposal from Chancellor Lee Roberts, Carolina is planning to welcome 5,000 additional undergraduates over the next decade. First-year applications have surged 57% since 2019, driving demand for more student housing on campus.
To help meet that need, UNC-Chapel Hill will construct a new residence hall focused on sophomore students. Located on the main campus, the new building will provide approximately 600 beds in a mix of single and double rooms, along with interior and exterior gathering spaces. While a full dining facility is not planned, the design may include shell space for a small café or vendor. As the university’s first new housing construction since 2006, the project marks the beginning of a ten-year housing initiative—making schedule and budget discipline critical to long-term success.
